Compass box source high-quality European oak from a small mill in France, and it’s this relationship that led to them experimenting with secondary maturation of malt whiskies in casks fitted with new French oak heads. A rare practice that results in the whisky having duel characteristics from each oak type.

Appearance: Lemon gold.
Nose: Plenty of oak with light spice and citrus notes.
Taste: Clove and vanilla accent a sweet maltiness and subtle fruity characteristics.
Finish: Lengthy oaky tannins with spicy vanilla and cinnamon.
Overall: A fruitful and spicy blend elongated by plenty of barrel character.

A bottling that captures the essence of Compass Box, doing things differently and trying to break away from traditional scotch whisky norms. If you’re getting a bit tired of the same old drams and are searching for something different, Compass Box whiskies might quench your thirst.

If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Compass Box Oak Cross, you could also try Bushmills Black Bush, Nomad Outland Whisky Sherry Finish or Nikka from the Barrel.

Scotch whisky is a very broad category consisting of various styles, regions and production methods. It is unclear whether Ireland or Scotland was the first to produce whisky but it is likely that the practice became common in both countries concurrently. It is commonly thought that the knowledge of distillation was brought to Scotland (and Ireland) by monks returning from the Mediterranean and the Middle East in around 1000AD.

Compass Box Whisky

Compass Box have created a bit of a storm by literally turning blended whisky on its head. Instead of a high grain to malt barley like you’d expect, Compass Box have a very high malt part. This is how the original blends would have been made.

Water, Yeast, Grain.
