Baker’s is one of Beam Suntory’s ‘small batch series’ bourbons. Named after Baker Beam, grandnephew of Jim Beam himself, Baker’s utilises a special strain of jug yeast that gives this whiskey its silky smooth texture. What is jug yeast you ask? Jug yeast refers to the distiller’s yeast starter of unique wild yeasts that are fed and kept in a cool place, hidden away from those who might be looking to steal it.

Appearance: Deep mahogany.
Nose: Lots of vanilla and caramel with hints of orchard fruit.
Taste: Silky créme brulee, hazelnuts and caramel.
Finish: Vanilla notes from the smooth oak tannins.
Overall: Rich, slightly nutty bourbon.

Get this bourbon if you’re buying for a Cognac or brandy drinker and looking to get something a bit different. Baker’s 7 is also very smooth considering its alcohol content, making it a good choice for people new to drinking straight whisky or bourbons in general.

If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Baker’s 7, you could also try Buffalo Trace, Knob Creek 9 or Basil Hayden’s 8.

Distilling was most likely brought to present-day Kentucky in the late 18th century by Scots, Scots-Irish, and other settlers (including English, Irish, Welsh, German, and French) who began to farm the area in earnest. The origin of bourbon as a distinct form of whiskey is not well documented. As you will see across this shop, there are many conflicting legends and claims, some more credible than others.

Jim Beam Distillery.

Founded by a family of German Immigrants who ‘Americanised’ their second name from Boehm to Beam. Distilling began in 1795. Prohibition forced closure but business resumed again in 1933.

Baker’s Bourbon is distilled at a lower proof, barrelled and aged in small batches, allowing the bourbon to pull more toasted nut, fruit & vanilla flavour from the oak.

Corn, Malted Barley, Rye.
