Laphroaig has been dividing opinions for over 200 years, just a quick visit to their website lets you know this as they openly embrace this fact. The smoke and iodine dominate this whisky as they use plenty of peat to dry their barley. Situated right on the shore, salty sea air permeates the production and ageing process. This all combines to give the whisky its trademark ‘band-aid’ note.

Appearance: Rich straw.
Nose: Intense smoke, band-aids, iodine.
Taste: Light lemon citrus and a hint of green pear, dominated by smoke and salty maritime equipment.
Finish: Smoke dries out with umami seaweed notes.
Overall: Bold and intense, not a whisky youŐll soon forget.

Love or hate it, tasting this whisky is an experience beholden to all. You’ll know a Laphroaig fan when you meet one, they’ll make a point of letting you know. This whisky is also amazing used sparingly in cocktails as it adds a burst of smoke, try your next penicillin cocktail with a dash of Laphroaig 10 in it.

If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Laphroaig 10 you could also try Port Charlotte Scottish Barley, Bowmore 12 or Octomore 8.1.

Well known for its tarry, creosote, peat flavours Laphroaig still malts a portion of its own barley on its own malting floors, as they believe their own kiln contributes more to help impart those characteristics. They take a deeper cut of the still run so they can hold on to more phenols. Mostly aged in ex-Bourbon.

Laphroaig Distillery.

Laphroaig means ‘hollow by the bay’. Established in 1815, it is arguably the most recognisable of all the Islay distilleries. Famous for its rich, peaty smoke flavour. Unusual for a distillery it has an uneven amount of stills, three wash stills and four spirit stills.
