Highland Park credit the success of their 18-year-old to five unique keystones to their production process; Slow burning peat from the local Hobbister Moor, hand turned floor malting, sherry seasoned European oak casks for maturation, cool maturation climate of the Orkney Islands and an unhurried harmonisation process. No wonder this malt is so rich, yet balanced.

Appearance: Burnished gold.
Nose: Heather, honey, smoked trout and red fruits.
Taste: Rich toffee, orchard fruits, almonds and smoked meat.
Finish: Dark chocolate, leathery tobacco, raisins underlay with warming smoke.
Overall: There is so much going you could spend hours listing all the different notes, but somehow it isn’t overwhelming at all.

Look, it may be a pretty penny, but this whisky did win ‘Best Spirit in the World’ on two separate occasions. Not just ‘best whisky’ or ‘best in class’, but ‘Best Spirit’. This is definitely a whisky you’ll want to come back to over and over, for quality control reasons obviously…

If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Highland Park 18, you could also try Bunnahabhain 18, Hibiki 17 or Springbank 15.

The Highland Park Distillery burn 4000 year old peat to dry their malted barley. The peat is dense and is mostly made of heather, meaning it burns slowly and imparts specific flavours on the malt. This a different type of smokiness you’d get from an Islay malt.

Highland Park Distillery.

This is scotland’s northernmost distillery, based in Kirkwall, Orkney. In fact the distillery is almost inside the arctic circle and is closer to Oslo than London.
