Glenfarclas mature their malts in traditional dunnage warehouses, where they have stock dating back to 1952. In true Speyside style, their whisky is heavily influenced by the use of ex-sherry cask maturation. The 15-year-old, aged longer and bottled at a higher proof than the 10 year is truly exceptional. With so much depth coming from the casks, it has been highly praised by fans of Sherry ageing.

Appearance: Deep amber.
Nose: Pepper, Raisins and oaky spice.
Taste: Lush sherry notes, toasted muesli, grapes and cherries.
Finish: Cinnamon spice leading to tobacco smoke and chocolate raisins.
Overall: Massive sherry beast of a whisky.

Anyone who raves about sherry finished whisky is going to appreciate the crap out of this malt. Drink it after dinner with rich desserts, cheeses or while enjoying a cigar. Excellent value for the age statement, this goes to show the benefit of buying brands from independent family run distilleries.

If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Glenfarclas 15, you could also try Dalwhinnie 15, Highland Park 18 or Bunnahabhain 18.

Scotch whisky is a very broad category consisting of various styles, regions and production methods. It is unclear whether Ireland or Scotland was the first to produce whisky but it is likely that the practice became common in both countries concurrently. It is commonly thought that the knowledge of distillation was brought to Scotland (and Ireland) by monks returning from the Mediterranean and the Middle East in around 1000AD.
