Triple distilled, the Black Bush combines a high proportion of malt whiskey aged in ex-Oloroso Sherry casks with batch-distilled grain whiskey. This results in a peppery whisky with loads of berry fruit notes, thus the whiskey is aptly named Black Bush.

Appearance: Copper.
Nose: White pepper and spiced baked apples.
Taste: Red fruits and raisins with honeyed nuts.
Finish: light spice gives way to smooth sherried tannins.
Overall: No faffing about here with this nonsense whiskey.

In terms of value for money for an everyday drinking Irish whiskey, you can’t look past the Black Bush. Probably the most ‘rock and roll’ of the Irish whiskies, get this for your friend that likes wearing Jack Daniels branded singlets.

If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Bushmills Black Bush, you could also try Redbreast 12, Jameson Select Reserve or Teeling Single Grain.

Irish whiskey was once the most popular spirit in the world and has been massively on the rise in popularity in recent years. Ireland and Scotland both lay claim to being whisky’s original creator but it’s likely both nations developed a similar product at around the same time. The knowledge of distillation is commonly thought to have been brought to Ireland (and Scotland) by monks returning from the Mediterranean and the Middle East in around 1000AD.

Located in Northern ireland in County antrim, Bushmills like to use the year 1608 on their bottles, making them seem like the oldest distillery. While itŐs true the area Bushmills occupies was granted a license to distill at that time The Bushmills Old Distillery Company wasnŐt founded until 1784. Bushmills continues to be the standard bearer for triple distilled Irish Single Malts.
