Description
FULL DESCRIPTION
Continuing on from Bombay Sapphire, the Star of Bombay adds two more botanicals to the mix, bergamot peel and ambrette seeds. Still remaining relatively light, the juniper becomes earthier. Bottled at a much higher alcohol volume of 47.5%, this gin is much more pronounced and punchy, intended to be used in Martinis and other contemporary classic gin cocktails.
TASTING NOTES
Appearance: Crystal.
Nose: Spicy citrus, earthy juniper and musky forest floor notes.
Taste: Dried pine and coriander with earthy Christmas cake.
Finish: Spicy and floral while remaining clean and dry.
Overall: A chewy gin with deep earthy notes that resemble that of a forest floor. Musky fruit and spice give way to the classic sweet peppery notes typical of Bombay.
Gift
A serious gin for a more serious gin drinker, the Star of Bombay has the added depth and proof that someone wanting a good martini is looking for. Despite the higher alcohol volume, you don’t have to worry about it being too punchy as it manages to remain exceptionally smooth, as to not frighten off the less seasoned drinkers.
RECOMMENDATIONS
If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Star of Bombay, you could also try Plymouth Navy Strength, Martin Millers Westbourne Strength or Whitley Neil.
Connoisseur
Alcoholic spirits originally found their place as a “cure all’ in medieval Europe. Gin was the next step, incorporating the medical benefits held in plants. Various botanical elements were thought to have different health giving properties most notably in the case of gin, juniper. When mixed with spiritus alcohol a rudimentary medicine was formed and became popular all over the continent.
