Description
FULL DESCRIPTION
It can be hard to find an Islay malt that can be consumed on a day to day basis without stripping your pallet (and soul for that matter) clean. Caol Ila Distillery manages to produce whiskies that capture the essence of Islay while remaining accessible and the 12-year-old is at the centre of their range.
TASTING NOTES
Appearance: Sun-brushed hay.
Nose: Light peat, apple crumble and a hint of brine.
Taste: Salted taffy, vanilla and green apples.
Finish: Iodine, seaweed notes with honey and smoke.
Overall: Very approachable, bright vibrant citrus and orchid fruits are present with a hint of bines and caramels. The finish resembles honey-cured, smoked salmon.
Gift
An excellent introduction to the world of peated whiskies, the Caol Ila 12 is accessible while still portraying the flavours of Islay. A unique scotch and one that no whisky collection should go without, this is a malt most people are happy to drink.
RECOMMENDATIONS
If the person you’re buying for is a fan of the Caol Ila 12, you could also try Old Pulteney 12, Talisker 10 or Oban 14.
Connoisseur
Scotch whisky is a very broad category consisting of various styles, regions and production methods. It is unclear whether Ireland or Scotland was the first to produce whisky but it is likely that the practice became common in both countries concurrently. It is commonly thought that the knowledge of distillation was brought to Scotland (and Ireland) by monks returning from the Mediterranean and the Middle East in around 1000AD.
