Connoisseur
Irish whiskey was once the most popular spirit in the world and has been massively on the rise in popularity in recent years. Ireland and Scotland both lay claim to being whisky’s original creator but it’s likely both nations developed a similar product at around the same time. The knowledge of distillation is commonly thought to have been brought to Ireland (and Scotland) by monks returning from the Mediterranean and the Middle East in around 1000AD.
DISTILLERY
Midleton Distillery.
ABOUT THE DISTILLERY
Middleton is widely acknowledged as Irish whiskey’s spiritual home. In 1966, John Jameson, Powers, and the Cork Distillery Company formed Irish Distillers and in a bid to make sure their future was tenable, closed all their existing distilleries and merged into one site in Middleton, Cork. This was the only site big enough for expansion. Middleton is now one of the largest and most modern distilleries in the world boasting three 75,000 litre pot stills.
