FULL DESCRIPTION
The Balvenie 12 Doublewood pays tribute to the Balvenie Distillery history of finishing malts in ex-wine casks. Doublewood refers to the fact that this whisky is aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon barrels and then aged an additional 9 months in ex-oloroso sherry casks before being bottled. The use of sherry casks for finishing whisky has become somewhat of a standard practice amongst Speyside malts.
TASTING NOTES
Appearance: Brilliant Copper.
Nose: Sherry notes and ripe red fruits with hints of oak and spice.
Taste: Fragrant vanillas, milk chocolate and dried fruits.
Finish: Slight spice of cracked pepper, cinnamon and ginger with wine tannins.
Overall: Lots of interesting fruit and spice balanced with light caramels and honey tones, straight up Speyside.
Gift
Since its release, The Balvenie 12 Doublewood has engraved itself permanently into the Balvenie range. Becoming a favourite of the punters, this malt shows off its Speyside characteristics in a very clear manner. Debatable, but one of the malts that no whisky collection is complete without, it’s absence definitely leaves an obvious hole that’s for sure.
RECOMMENDATIONS
If the person you’re buying for is a fan of The Balvenie 12 Doublewood, you could also try The Macallan 12 Sherry Oak or Auchentoshan Three Wood.
Connoisseur
Thanks to natural alchemy and centuries-old craftsmanship, The Balvenie is unique among single malts. Their whisky-making process is dedicated to maintaining the ‘Five Rare Crafts’ and they are the only distillery in Scotland that still grows its own barley, uses traditional floor malting techniques, and, keeps both a coppersmith and a team of coopers on site. Finally, the Malt Master, David C. Stewart MBE presides over the all-important maturation process.
