Review: Kino Vino & Rémy Martin's Parisian Feast

The end of August saw us team up once more with supper-club specialists Kino Vino, as well as French cognac connoisseurs Rémy Martin, for a night of food, film, and high-quality cocktail pairings.

Kino Vino, and their founder Alissa Timoshkina, have built a strong reputation for putting together unique film-and-supper examinations looking into the way in which food, culture and cinema interact to enhance people’s culinary experience.

On the night, through this dual medium, guests were transported to Paris’ romantic causeways and verdant gardens thanks to a 6-course banquet packed with the finest Parisian produce around, as well as a special pre-dinner screening of Pierre Jeunet’s whimsical romantic comedy – Amelie.

Arriving through the doors of our specialist liquor store on Kingsland Road, guests were treated to a complimentary welcome drink alongside some freshly-prepared nibbles, before they were led through the swinging saloon doors and into our new 52-seater screening room.

There, they were met by ambassadors from Remy Martin, who talked attendees through the delicate art of cognac creation whilst handing out tasters of their liquid, which our guests duly nosed and sipped their way through.

Whistles wetted, the time arrived for the visual feast of the evening.

In telling the story of Amelie, shot in over 80 Parisian locations, acclaimed director Jean-Pierre Jeunet invokes his incomparable visionary style to capture the exquisite charm and mystery of modern-day Paris through the eyes of his beautiful ingenue.

Over a decade on, it’s fair to say Amélie holds up. It is still visually striking, still fresh and appealing, charming and resonant. For better or for worse, it made the bohemian district of Montmartre popular in a way that it hadn’t quite been before, it assisted in (if not launched) the career of painter Michael Sowa, whose whimsical/surreal images of quirky animals appear throughout the film, and – most of all – it left an enduring imprint on popular culture and helped redefine what a romantic comedy could be.

Attendees well and truly prepared for the Parisian feast to come, our hosts then led them upstairs to our banqueting space where they were treated to a 6-course sumptuous repast of classic French flavours. They ranged from a beautiful herb-roasted chicken and Crostini with chicken liver pate for those savoury souls, to a delicate plum and tarragon tarte tatin to satisfy those sweet teeth.

As per tradition, the liquids fell under our purview. With no small amount of help from the guys at Remy, our expert bartenders put together a series of perfectly-matched cocktail pairings designed to amplify and compliment the strong Parisian flavours of the evening.

One of the standout crowd-pleasers without doubt was the ‘Prince of Wales’. A heady mixture of Rémy Martin, pineapple juice, lemon, Maraschino & sparkling white wine, this one was a spritz with a difference and it certainly went down a treat with our guests.

In all, another successful outing for Kino Vino, TT Liquor, and Remy Martin; a big thank you to everyone who came along and joined our Parisian pleasure cruise.
