Amélie Industry Screening
19th August
On 19th August, we’ll be attempting to hoist you out of those post-summer blues with Amélie, an uplifting French romantic comedy directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
This fanciful comedy follows a young woman – Amélie – who discretely orchestrates the lives of the people around her, invoking elements of magical realism to create a world exclusively of her own making.
Shot in over 80 Parisian locations, acclaimed director Jean-Pierre Jeunet invokes his incomparable visionary style to capture the exquisite charm and mystery of modern-day Paris through the eyes of a beautiful ingenue.
Over a decade on, Amélie holds up. It is still visually striking, still fresh and appealing, charming and resonant. For better or for worse, it made the bohemian district of Montmartre popular in a way that it hadn’t quite been before, it assisted in (if not launched) the career of painter Michael Sowa, whose whimsical/surreal images of quirky animals appear throughout the film, and – most of all – it left an enduring imprint on popular culture and helped redifine what a romantic comedy could be.
